CBD with Bre: Nostalgia

Welcome to CBD With Bre, a blog series where I, as a self-proclaimed CBD noob, recount my experiences getting into the world of CBD. While I have a fair amount of knowledge on the research and science side of things, as I’m learning, it’s quite different when applied off the page.

So far, I’ve been able to get my hands on every LoFi product. I’ve learned that I really enjoy CBD, that the softgels are my favourite, and I feel drowsy if I take too much. Because I’ve had so much success with other CBD products, I thought it was about time I try our latest release: Nostalgia.

Previously, I had sat down with Greg Christie from Terrior Craft Farms to chat about the process of growing craft hemp. It was really neat to get the insider scoop into Nostalgia and what it’s like to be a hemp farmer in Canada, especially as hemp laws and the list of approved cultivars can pose a challenge to growers wanting to produce high resin (CBD) flower. Getting to experience some of this flower first hand was kind of the next step.

The Experiment

Unlike other CBD with Bre product tests, I wasn’t really looking for anything in particular when trying Nostalgia. I wanted to see if the effects of the flower held up against things like the Softgels, since I enjoyed those so much. I’ve also done a fair amount of vaping CBD, so I suppose I wanted to see if there was much of a difference between that and my experience with Nostalgia. Spoiler alert, there was.

The one big hurdle, however, is how little I like to smoke. I’ve done it a few times for Woody Nelson products, but it’s not really my thing. Maybe if I got more used to it, but it feels less convenient and a bit of a hassle. I often have trouble remembering to do things, even if those things are good for me. Trying to fit smoking into my routine is a lot less viable than just taking a softgel. Even the CBD oil, as much as I love it, has kind of fallen to the wayside too. So going into this, I wasn’t sure if Nostalgia would really be my thing. It had big shoes to fill.

My Experience

Nostalgia was a pretty decent smoke, even considering my lack of experience in smoking. It smells amazing right from the bag. I’ve had it sitting around for a few months now and it seems just as fresh as it did when I first bought it. It’s sticky and sweet and the smell alone makes it a nice experience to grind up. On a more critical note, I did have some mild troubles when it came to smoking it. The first time I tried, the joint just wouldn’t stay lit so it was hard to get a proper smoke on. The second time was a bit better, but I still had a similar issue with it going out too quickly. However, some of this might be user error too – I’m getting better at rolling joints but I’m still pretty bad at it. Either way, I wouldn’t call it a dealbreaker.

Although I didn’t have a ton to compare it to, the smoke was still nice. The thing that caught my attention the most was how good it tasted. There was the nice burnt, smoked flavor from the joint, but also a really deep note of pine. It reminded me of camping, or late Kootenay nights. I might be able to tolerate the smoking thing more in the future if tastes that good.

In terms of the effect of the CBD itself, I definitely found myself vibing with it. As I’ve said before, CBD works really well for me. I don’t mind THC, but I’m more on that CBD train. I know it’s not everyone’s jam, but I just feel like I function a lot better. The thing I noticed about Nostalgia specifically was how much it reminded me of the softgels. It hit a lot faster because of smoking, but I actually enjoyed it more than the oil and vape cart. One thing I really appreciated about the softgels was that I felt like I could notice the difference the higher THC levels made, and I’m feeling the same about Nostalgia. While I didn’t get high at all, I could feel the effects, if that makes sense.

All in all, I enjoyed Nostalgia more than I was expecting to. I can’t say that it’s going to be as easy to incorporate into my routine as the softgels were, and the whole smoking thing still provides a bit of a barrier. But I haven’t been able to get my hands on the softgels since running out a while ago, and I’m really vibing with the whole complexity Nostalgia has to offer. The experience feels a lot deeper and more well-rounded than other CBD products, and for me, that makes it super worth it. There’s also something about the ritual of it all that feels very down to earth and intentional – it slows things down. I think I could use a bit more of that in my life. So while I wait to get my hands on more softgels, I think I might lean a bit more into Nostalgia.

TL;DR

While smoking isn’t my thing and presents a bit of a barrier to me enjoying Nostalgia regularly, I enjoyed the experience a lot more than I thought I would. With Nostalgia, I could feel the complexity of the entourage effect fully in the experience, and despite my initial hesitation, I think it’s managed to work its way higher up on my list of best CBD experiences.
